The Role
The role is required to develop and lead research at a national or international level, as team leader of the Cardiac & Stroke Program. This research program will involve collaborations with people and organizations external to the GI at national and international levels.
Reporting Relationships
The Head, Cardiac & Stroke Program will report to the Executive Director directly.
Duties and Key Responsibilities
• Provide high level oversight and contribution to all research activities of the Cardiac & Stroke Program.
• lead the establishment and development of the database, reporting lines, staff development and organisation of the study.
• Be responsible and lead others in the preparation of new grant applications, developing study protocols, operation manuals, training programs, health education materials, data collection tools and quality control plans.
• Keep routine communications with team members to ensure that the academic support is given timely and key principles are followed accordingly during implementation, including technical training, study participants sampling and randomization, study monitoring, data collection coordination and other technical tasks for the program.
• Actively develop and promote the desired culture of The George Institute by ensuring all interactions, documentation and communication are conducted in a manner which supports the stated mission.
• Foster strategic research collaborations with other researchers on programs both within and external to The George Institute.
• Directly write, and guide others in development of reports on analyses that are suitable for publication in high impact journals.
• Lead grant writing and revenue raising for the development of new projects.
• Ensure that research being conducted is congruent with world best practice.
• Remain abreast of developments that are relevant to the Program and the Institute, providing a source of information to colleagues within the Institute.
Leadership
• Provide leadership, advice and support in projects, and exercise autonomy in relation to techniques, methods and procedures to achieve desired outcomes.
• Provide coaching/mentoring to program operational staff across The George Institute China and actively seek to provide developmental opportunities for these staff.
• Lead and support the implementation of strategies and tools to support the management of programs across The George Institute China.
Represent GI China and promote its reputation
• Contribute to the development of research proposals and funding applications.
• Makes decisions that impact on the entire organization.
• Maintain effective relationships with research funding organisations from both the public and private sector.
Customer Focus and Teamwork
• Attend and actively participate in The George Institute meetings and other internal meetings as required.
• Promote team building and the empowerment of staff and provide a stimulating environment which encourages team and individual growth.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
Essential
• Master’s or higher degree in clinical medicine/health service management/ epidemiology/ related area, or other relevant postgraduate qualification with specialist experience in these areas.
• The experience as a residence doctor in neurology and stroke management.
• Advanced technical writing and oral presentation skills in Mandarin/English.
• Able to function independently while knowing own limitations and when referral of issues to supervisor is required.
• Highly motivated, results oriented and able to deliver on time.
• Well organised and with good time management.
• Attention to detail and rigorous methodological approach.
• Flexibility and the ability to work effectively in an ambiguous and continually changing environment.
• Solid understanding of research and related ethical principles in the conduct of research.
• Previous experience in managing and supporting collaborative program in a multidisciplinary team.
• Ability to perform statistical analyses.
• Strong problem solving, analytical skills, and strategic thinking.
• Strong leadership and mentoring skills.
General
• Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and the Internet
• Ability to travel for site monitoring and meetings
