Head of Research Service
The Role
The Head of Research Services will have line management responsibility for the effective functioning as part of GI China’s three main operating groups: Research Services, Research Programs, and Finance and Operations.
Reporting Relationships
The Head of Research Services will report directly to the Executive Director (ED) of GI China. .
Duties and Key Responsibilities
• Provide high level oversight and contribution to all research activities of the Institute
• Ensure activities comply with relevant acts, legal demands and ethical standards
• Develop/maintain national and international links to support research activities
Coordination and integration of research support
• Develop and manage a system for tracking the submission, approvals and outcome of applications for new grants and fellowships, and external research contracts with stakeholders in China
• Coordinate processes across the full range of research activities; from higher degree students and early career researchers to intellectual property identification and referral for technology transfer
• Coordinate the identification of local and international research funding opportunities and ensure that GI China staff and students have timely access to information about new and recurring grant funding opportunities, research fellowships, awards and prizes.
• Oversee the maintenance of a central database on Institute staff research output, esteem measures and other requirements of central funding systems, including those indices of research quality and impact required to determine funding
Strategic Planning and Capacity Development
• Work with the research committee to identify key funding opportunities and information
• Develop a resource base of potential sources of scholarships and fellowships (including the University of Sydney, Oxford University)
• Liaise with the University of Sydney and Peking University Health Science Center with respect to postgraduate student supervision schemes and cotutelle programs.
Quality Assurance
• Coordinate research quality initiatives with the Institute
• Provide support for the Institute’s research quality framework including the management, review and approval of research grant applications, external research contracts, and research outputs, in particular research reports and publications
• Influence, develop and consult with colleagues and team members to achieve best practice in research conduct and reports
• Incorporate a quality assurance framework in reviewing administrative processes and service delivery
• Establish appropriate benchmarks to monitor and improve performance toward best practice and high impact publications
• Provide clear guidance to project teams on specific deliverables
• Ensure all studies are resourced effectively, managed efficiently, achieve project objectives within allocated budgets and agreed timelines
• Ensure all activities are conducted in accordance with project specific documentation, applicable SOPs, ICH GCP (if applicable), and applicable regulatory requirements
• Provide leadership, advice and support for projects, and exercise autonomy in relation to techniques, methods and procedures to achieve desirable outcomes
• Ensure that the research being conducted is congruent with world best practice from and analytical/statistics perspective
Relationship Management
• Be a primary point of contact with a range of key funding sources and organisations
• Maintain effective communication, relationships and networks at an operational level
• Develop and maintain effective networks and relationships with other relevant administrative service providers with key universities, hospitals and medical research institutes
Represent GI China and promote its reputation
• Contribute to the development of research proposals and funding applications
• Makes decisions that impact on the entire organisation
• Maintain effective relationships with research funding organisations from both the public and private sector
Management and leadership
• Demonstrate leadership and management skills in addition to the ability to develop a shared vision and motivate others to achieve superior performance
• Provide coaching/mentoring to research staff across GI China and actively seek to provide developmental opportunities for staff
• Lead and support the implementation of strategies and tools to support the management of research across GI China.

Occupational Health and Safety
• Comply with OH&S legislation and operate in accordance with established OH&S practice and procedures at The George Institute

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
• Masters degree or above in a medical, public health, or science related field
• Minimum of 8 years experience in research management/service and risk management.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and high proficiency in Microsoft Word / Excel / Powerpoint / Outlook
• Fluent spoken and written English and Mandarin
• Highly developed communication and consultation skills, particularly the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders at a senior level - management, academic and administrative staff - as well as with research students and other research personnel
• Excellent analytical, project management, and problem solving skills
• Experience and understanding of the management of research contracts, intellectual property and commercialisation of research outcomes
• Demonstrated commitment to quality assurance and continuous improvement in administrative and work processes
• Demonstrate capacity to contribute to policy development and high level strategic planning
• Sound budgeting and business knowledge skills
• Ability to see the big picture, yet still focus on detail
• Conscientious and mature in daily work, particularly in dealing with sensitive or confidential matters; and has a high level of initiative and able to work independently and reliably
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and work under pressure
