In Australia, 1.8million people have breathlessness (dyspnea) that is costly and inefficiently investigated and managed. As the population ages, dyspnea will impact productivity, healthcare, and demand for community services. We will develop an electronic clinical decision support system “e-breathe” to facilitate the evaluation and management of dyspnea and its underlying causes. We aim to make this tool user-friendly, cost-effective and clinically efficient, in order to achieve better outcomes for breathless patients. We will pilot test e-Breathe and then conduct a cluster randomised trial in primary care, to enable an effective, affordable fast track to diagnosis and optimal management of breathlessness.
The ideal candidate for this project will be an outstanding early career medical graduate who has recently obtained their Fellowship as a physician or primary care clinician. They will be seeking an opportunity to build on their clinical training and to bring their clinical expertise to undertake a proposed PhD program within our world-class research environment. They will have a strong desire to learn about clinical trials methodology and implementation, good analytical and practical problem solving skills, a strong focus on excellence and the ability to work in study teams to achieve the best outcomes in a clinical research setting. We expect this role will help develop skills, expertise and a passion for translational research to enable the fellow to seek competitive research funding and undertake independent research, specifically clinical trials directly applicable to improving patient care and outcomes.
The supervisory team is Christine Jenkins, The George Institute for Global Health, Guy Marks, Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, Liverpool Hospital Clinical School, Allison Humphries, The George Institute for Global Health.
