2018 World Heart Day: My Heart, Your Heart

Cardiovascular disease (CVD), including heart disease and stroke, is the world’s leading cause of death, claiming 17.5 million lives annually, and by 2030 this figure is expected to rise to 23 million.

A simple promise for My Heart, Your Heart is the focus of World Heart Day in 2018 – It’s about saying to yourself, the people you care about and individuals all around the world.

Researchers at The George Institute for Global Health are committed to advocating for healthy lifestyles, driving innovation in heart disease treatment, preventing repeat heart attacks, identifying ways to lower cardiovascular disease risk factors in developing countries, and finding ways to improve health outcomes for people living with heart disease all over the world.

The project, Salt substitute and Stroke Study (SSaSS), is one of the largest health research projects in China, which includes a total of 21,000 participants from 600 villages. It is evaluating whether a low-sodium salt substitute in the diet can reduce the risk of stroke, as well as other serious CVD events such as heart attack, and improve long-term survival.

“If SSaSS really works and proves that low-sodium salt can reduce the cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, it will undoubtedly provide a sufficient scientific basis for decision makers to prepare for the use of low-sodium salt substitute across the whole population.” says Professor Wu Yangfeng, Principal Investigator of SSaSS

Another project advocating for healthy lifestyle is Action on Salt China (ASC) to improve healthy living by reducing people’s intake of at home, at work and in eating out, across the whole of China. Professor Puhong Zhang, China Director of ASC said, “We will develop and implement a comprehensive, effective and sustainable national salt reduction program targeting various salt intake paths, with the goal of achieving a 15% reduction by 2021 and 30% reduction by 2025.”

Professor Craig Anderson, Executive Director of George Institute China said although there was a long way to go, China's salt reduction work is an imperative. “We hope ASC will achieve a comprehensive salt reduction strategy and truly reduce salt intake, and provide other countries with a model of successful salt reduction activity to refer to.”

The George Institute advocates for positive, proactive heart health and celebrates World Heart Day with the global population on Saturday 29 September 2018.
